Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’ Primarily Campaigned as Best Picture by Netflix

October 31, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

I was lucky enough to watch “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” at home this past weekend. A major shout out to Netflix for setting up that screening.

Wait until you catch Del Toro’s dark version of this children’s tale. The craftsmanship is top-notch and visually inventive. Some of the sequences are absolutely mesmerizing in the way they portray these darkly black themes. I could have gone without some of the musical stuff, but a review will be coming ..

Netflix has an FYC ad up and running for Del Toro's Pinocchio. They don’t even mention the Animated Feature category. It’s being campaigned for Best Picture, front and center! It's looking very likely that both Del Toro’s film and “Glass Onion” will be the two major Netflix pushes this season.

Does ‘Pinocchio’ even stand a chance? Only three animated films have ever gotten nominated for Best Picture: “Beauty and the Beast,” “Toy Story 3” and “Up.” ‘Pinocchio’ has a tough road ahead of it, but the industry loves Del Toro. It’s doable.

“Guillermo Del Toro’ Pinocchio”, yes that’s the official title, with the filmmaker’s name stamped on it, currently has a 93 on Metacritic and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 18 reviews). It’s practically a cinch to win Best Animated Feature.
