SAG Snubs ‘West Side Story’ and Kristen Stewart

January 12, 2022 Jordan Ruimy

Call this the two big shockers of awards season thus far.

Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” was almost completely snubbed by the Screen Actors Guild today. The film didn’t receive a Best Ensemble nomination and Rachel Zegler didn’t make Best Actress. The only nomination was for Ariana DeBose in Best Supporting Actress.

Spielberg’s movie might be in trouble.

Kristin Stewart as Princess Diana in “Spencer” was also snubbed, replaced by Jennifer Hudson for “Respect.” We can now safely state that K-Stew is not the Oscar frontrunner. Yikes. Her whole campaign was designed by Film Twitter from the start. That’s now how you win Oscars.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza,” one of the best ensembles of the last year, only got one nomination, for Bradley Cooper’s 6-minute cameo in the Supporting Actor category.

What else?

SAG loved “House of Gucci.” Lady Gaga a Leading Actress nom. Ditto Jared Leto for his gonzo performance.

Actor-wise, there was no Peter Dinklage (Cyrano), but Javier Bardem got in for “Being the Ricardos”? WTF! The rest of the field was not that surprising, although it seems as though the nominated Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick .. BOOM!”) will now certainly be within reach of Oscar.

Ben Affleck getting a Supporting Actor nod for “The Tender Bar” instead of the far-superior “The Last Duel” is … something.
