It pains me to say this, but Clint Eastwood’s “Cry Macho” is incredibly generic. It also features a terrible performance from teenage actor Eduardo Minett. This is all coming from someone who has loved many of Eastwood’s late-career films; I will defend the virtues of “The Mule,” “Richard Jewell,” and “Sully” to the death. Alas, this latest Eastwood, which is a script he polished from the ‘70s, belongs in the same nadir league as “Paris 15:17” and “Heareafter.”

Nobody expected a 55-year-old NC-17 movie to be one of the surprise box office stories of the fall. Yet here we are, and this absolutely puts a smile on my face.
Of course, we all know the rule: take these reactions with a grain of salt rather than treating them as gospel. Still, I will say that the film tested like gangbusters earlier this year, and Lionsgate clearly has confidence.
Bryld shot "In Bruges," "The Holdovers" and "House of Cards." That seems like the right fit for what is a smaller, character-driven crime story, and a change of pace for McQuarrie after years of stunt-heavy theatrics.
Right now, the cleanest path is to let Reeves finish his trilogy and bring in the new guy once the dust has settled. Gunn clearly hasn’t gotten the memo.
