‘F9’ Debuts With Pandemic-era Record $70 Million Opening

June 27, 2021 Jordan Ruimy

The box office debut of “F9” was, as expected, strong-ish with a 3-day total of $70 million via 4,179 North American screens — by far the biggest start for a movie at the U.S. box office since the pandemic began last March.

Despite this “success,” “F9” didn’t come close to matching opening numbers of the previous installments in the franchise. 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious,” opened to $98 million, and 2015’s “Furious 7” had a staggering $147.2 million in its first three days of release.

“A Quiet Place Part II” and “F9” will in turn likely be the highest-grossing films of the summer, no coincidence then that they both refused co-streaming premieres with their theatrical bows. Only after 45 days on the big screen will “A Quiet Place Part II” will move to Paramount Plus, while “F9” will also be offered 45 days hence on premium video-on-demand platforms
