‘Spiral': Chris Rock's ‘Saw' Reboot Offers Up Fresh New Perspective [Trailer]

February 5, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

The “Saw” franchise doesn’t want to die.

When “Saw” made its debut at Sundance in 2004, it ended up changing the game in the horror genre. The visual style and grisly violence would influence a whole set of new young horror filmmakers for the next two decades to come. However, after a number of unnecessary sequels drove the concept into the ground, but don’t tell that to Chris Rock, who is trying to revive the franchise with his own reboot.

The first trailer for “Spiral,” has Rock playing detective and being called to investigate a crime scene where a police officer was killed and a spiral was left as an ambiguous warning. The film also stars Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Samuel L. Jackson. Darren Lynn Bousman, returns to the series for this installment, he directed the 2nd, 3rd and 4th “Saw” films.

“Spiral’ is the ninth installment of the franchise and it certainly looks better than the last few “Saw” films we’ve received the last 10 years or so. Will it result in a comeback for this sagging series? We will certainly find out on May 15th, when “Spiral” arrives in theaters.
