Netflix Could Break an 85-Year Record at the Oscars With 5 Best Picture Nominees

November 23, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

One major studio that hasn’t suffered through this neverending pandemic is Netflix. In fact, the streaming giant’s arsenal of content this year could give them the most best picture nominations from any studio in history, a record held by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which scored five nods at the ninth Academy Awards in 1937.

Of course, it’s quite the bet to bank on this happening, but, quite surprisingly, it is a possibility, especially in a year when most of the major studios have been plagued with movie delays and constant rescheduling. Enter Netflix, who have fallen short of winning the top prize the last two years with the likes of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma.” They again have a decent shot at winning the top prize with Aaron Sorkin’s rousing and crowd-pleasing “Trial of the Chicago 7.”

The rest of the Netflix contenders for Best Picture are “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Da 5 Bloods,” “Pieces of a Woman,” “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “Midnight Sky,” “The Prom,” and “Hillbilly Elegy.” Regardless, there are numerous acting contenders within these films as well, which means Netflix will continue to up its credibility as a major distributor of cinema on the small screen.

Of note, MGM nabbed five Best Picture nominees more than 74 years ago when “The Great Ziegfeld” “Libeled Lady,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “San Francisco” and “A Tale of Two Cities.” [via Variety]
