Never Too Early to Spitball Cannes 2020

February 1, 2020 Jordan Ruimy
IMG_0094.jpeg

The Cannes Film Festival is four months away, but we’re starting to get a clearer picture of what the suspected titles to play in competition will be for the upcoming 2020 edition.

An interesting title that kept popping upthat will not be part of the 2020 edition is Christian Petzold’s “Undine,” for the simple reason that it has already been announced as being part of the competition for this February’s Berlin Film Festival. Another two titles that can also be taken out as candidates for Cannes include “Raw” director Julia Ducourneau’s “Titane,” and Miguel Gomes’ “Selvajaria,” both in pre-production.

And so, without further ado, here is the most up-to-date list of possible Cannes 2020 competition titles. I’ve amassed 21 potential movies, but the list will be updated monthly up through March and on a weekly basis, when things heat up, in April.

Mia Hansen-Løve’s Bergman Island
Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland”
Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s “Memoria”
Paul Verhoeven’s “Benedetta”
Leos Carax’s “Annette”
Sofia Coppola’s “On the Rocks”
Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch”
Nadav Lapid “Untitled”
Nanni Moretti “Tre Piani”
Laurent Cantet’s “Arthur Rambo”
Kornél Mundruczó’s “Pieces of a Woman “
Ana Lily Amirpour’s “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon”
Bruno Dumont’s “On A Half Clear Morning“
Hong Sang-soo’s Untitled Film
Abderrahmane Sissako’s “The Perfumed Hill
Kirill Serebrennikov’s “Petrov’s Flu”
Abdelatif Kechiche's "Mektoub: Canto Duo"
Ildiko Enyedi "The Story of My Wife"
Ulrich Seidl "Böse Spiele"
Maiwenn "ADN"
Michaelangelo Frammartino "Il Buco"
