Cannes 2019 Update

March 14, 2019 Jordan Ruimy

It’s not secret that Cannes and Netflix are trying to reach a deal in order for the streaming service to enter its films in the prestigious main competition of the festival. The latest proposal included a clause that would say if a Netflix film were to win an award at Cannes, then the streaming service would have to release that film in French theaters. Problematic, since Netflix is still uninterested in doing that.

Cannes already lost a major cinematic event last year when it was supposed to screen Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” but the higher-ups on the film board in France said “no way, Jose” not happening under our watch. Cannes head director Thierry Fremaux had raved about Cuaron’s film to the media, mentioning that he’d seen it a few times and seemed heartbroken that the fest would not screen the film. Now it’s the frontrunner to win Best Picture this Sunday night at the Oscars. Ouch.

In France there is a 36-month window law between a film being shown in theaters and then headed to streaming sites. THAT, in essence, is the main problem between the two parties in dispute. If this problem is not resolved soon then the Venice Film Festival, which has become Cannes’ bitter rival, will stand to benefit greatly again from the dispute.

For now, I’ve included 46 films rumored to head to the croisette this coming May. The list will be updated every few weeks, as rumors continuously come our way, in the meantime I have included Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” which is a Netflix movie, but stands a chance of being a major Oscar contender come next Spring. This is all based on extensive research I have concocted, which included rumor sites and first-hand knowledge from sources.
