Joel Edgerton will most likely be bringing his Boy Erased (11.2) to TIFF, Venice and, maybe even, Telluride. It does stink of Awards-bait prestige, but, alas, at least we have a mainstream film about, and made for, adults coming our way.
Lucas Hedges ("Manchester By The Sea," "Lady Bird") starring in it doesn't hurt either. Hedges plays real-life Garrard Conley, "whose experience with Christian gay-conversion therapy was the subject of his 2016 novel, “Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith, and Family.” Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman play Conley's ultra-conservative, and Christian parents. Edgerton is Hedges’ conversion therapist.
I do hope the film goes much deeper into the gay-conversion process, especially after the Sundance-winning "The Miseducation of Cameron Post" balked at the harder questions. The therapeutic process of gay conversion is, by all accounts, a horrifying experience. You can't sugarcoat it. I hope Edgerton nails it.
