The 2024 Golden Globes nominations have been announced. Does anybody care?

Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and The Heron” firmly exceeded expectations at the box-office this weekend with a $12.8M opening. What wonderful news! This is Miyazaki’s first ever #1 movie at the American box-office.

There, apparently, was a major studio bidding war for — wait for it — director Justin Lin’s next film.

As I continue to watch this pile of screeners sitting on my desk, and slowly assemble some kind of coherent top 10 of 2023, I’m also very much open to suggestions.

It’s not looking great for “Coyote vs. Acme” (per Matt Belloni). The film has had private screenings at the Warner Bros lot for a weeks now, but offers for the scrapped, and completed, movie just haven’t been to Warners’ liking.

This morning, Denis Villeneuve confirmed his plans to make “Dune: Messiah” during a press conference in South Korea. Although a screenplay is being worked on, Villeneuve isn’t sure when he’ll be shooting the film.

This afternoon, the American Film Institute (AFI) announced its annual top 10 movies of the year list. A good precursor for the rest of awards season. This could very well be our Best Picture lineup at the Oscars …

Mark Wahlberg will replace original lead Robert Downey Jr, the latter remains attached to the film as a producer, but what we really wanted was a Downey/Black “Kiss Kiss Bang” reunion. That’ll have to wait for another project.

Miller’s now in an entourage with Hebrew rapper Matisyahu and has been spending a lot of time in his Vermont-based goat farm.

Japanese distributor Bitters End has confirmed that it will be giving Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb epic “Oppenheimer” a theatrical release in Japan next year. A specific release date was not announced.
