I am not really disappointed that Pedro Almodovar is no longer attached to direct “Manual For Cleaning Women.” If he doesn’t feel comfortable directing a movie in English then why bother?

It was supposed to be a homecoming of sorts for Toronto-born Sarah Polley, but almost everyone I’ve spoken to about “Women Talking” is underwhelmed by the film.

I am not entirely sure what the point of Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light” was, other than to give Olivia Colman a major showcase role and set the film in a movie theatre. Cinema!

I wisely skipped every screening of “My Policeman” at TIFF. I’m utterly convinced that Harry Styles is a terrible actor and any movie he stars in will be ruined by presence.

My expectations were fairly tamed down when I entered the Princess of Wales theater last night for Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,” and know what? It turns out the film is meticulously made, with controlled framing and pacing that reminds you of Fincher.

Yes, most movies in Toronto get overpraised and unnecessarily lengthy applause, but you had to be in the room for “The Whale” this afternoon.

My original vibes with Lila Neugebauer’s “Causeway” were correct.

Laura Poitras fascinating “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” has won Venice. I can’t say I’m surprised as I mentioned a few days ago that it was between Poitras, Diop and Field.

I have to run to a 12:10 screening of “No Bears,” but just to say I didn’t feel the same high certain critics felt with Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s “The Woman King.”

Between “Bros” and “The Woman King”, it was a good night for overpraising at TIFF. The social media acclaim these two films received was a bit much, let’s all just calm down here.
