Darren Aronofsky Sets Next Film ‘The Whale’ At A24; Brendan Fraser Set To Star as 600-Hundred-Pound Loner Eating Himself to Death

January 12, 2021 Jordan Ruimy

It’s well-known that filmmaker Darren Aronofsky takes a few years off in-between projects. The last film he directed was the polarizing “Mother!” back in 2017. His rumored return to small-scale filmmaking, with A24’s upcoming “The Whale,” would mean something along the lines of “Black Swan,” “Requiem For A Dream” and his 1998 debut film “The Wrestler.”

‘PVT Chat’: 21st Century ‘Last Tango’ is Sexy, Provocative and Timely

January 5, 2021 Jordan Ruimy

“PVT Chat” stars Julia Fox, who turned a lot of heads in last year’s “Uncut Gems,” but even in the wake of that visceral movie, she goes for broke here, pulling out all the stops as a leather-clad cam girl/femme fatale in director Ben Hozie’s film. “PVT Chat” defies description as it keeps its focus on a wide-eyed burnout (Peter Vack), with a talent for online blackjack and the dominatrix (Fox) he meets in a chat room and masturbates to during private calls every night. When the opportunity for an in-person meeting starts to get flirted with, doubt arises, mistrust comes into the game and reality hits our protagonist like a sledgehammer.

‘Grease’ Attacked as “Racist, Rapey, Homophobic and Slut-Shaming.”

January 4, 2021 Jordan Ruimy
public.jpeg

Randall Kleiser‘s Grease has made its mark in movie history, nobody is doubting that, the silly and ironic ’50s nostalgia, which was a thing in the mid-70s to early ’80s, made the John Travolta-Olivia Newton John musical a worldwide pohenomenon. This resulted in a haul of $366 million at the box-office, a staggering amount for 1978. And yet, “Grease” is now back in the news for all the wrong reasons as British millennial wokesters, of all people, went straight on social media, after the film had aired on the BBC, to condemn Kleiser’s film for being “racist, rapey, homophobic and slut-shaming.”

Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ Was the Movie That Defined 2020

January 4, 2021 Jordan Ruimy

Opening on a black screen and the sound of a harsh cough. The first image is that of a bartender picking up a customer’s coin. There’s an emphasis on the touching. Germs, we’re being shown, is the primal enemy here. Then a woman - played by Gwyneth Paltrow - on a Hong Kong business trip has a layover in Chicago before returning home to Minneapolis, the film posits her as “patient zero,” the person who would be catching the mystery virus during her trip, only to have her symptoms fatally worsen and spread.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Tanks at the Box-Office as Moviegoers Still Hesitant to Visit Theaters

January 3, 2021 Jordan Ruimy

Warner Bros’ “Wonder Woman 1984” dropped a massive 67 percent in its second weekend of domestic release. its domestic total is now at a paltry $28.5 million in 10 days and $118.5 million worldwide. Don’t expect it to go that much higher in the coming weeks as WW84 is projected to end its theatrical run at around the $130 million mark.

3-Hour Cut of Kenneth Lonergan’s ‘Margaret’ Now Available to Stream on HBO Max

January 3, 2021 Jordan Ruimy

We’re about to relaunch this column. I hope you all had wonderful holidays. It’s 2021, and since we’re all still stuck indoors, unless you live in Florida, then maybe it’s time that you watch Kenneth Lonergan’s 3-hour extended cut of “Margaret“. Lonergan’s cinematic “spiritual” cannot be more relevant today. It’s about disillusionment. Feeling disenfranchised. Being “red-pilled,” so to speak, if you want it in simpler terms. It was previously only available on DVD. The extended cut is now available to stream on HBO Max as a bonus feature accompanying the two-and-a-half-hour theatrical version.

The 15 Best Movies of 2020

December 31, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Through the context of a movie year that had most of its post-March theatrical releases canceled, the number of great movies that actually came out this year was surprisingly plentiful. Have we finally reached the point when, even if almost an entire year of theatrical moviegoing gets thrown out of the window, we could still find a bountiful amount of quality films via streaming platforms? I believe we’ve reached that point.

‘Herself’: Irish-Produced Indie Is A Saccharine-inducing Female Empowerment Melodrama [Capsule]

December 30, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Clare Dunne stars in “Herself” as Sandra Kelly, a determined woman who decides to build her own home in this Dublin-set drama. Dunne co-wrote the screenplay with director Phyllida Lloyd (‘Mamma Mia!’). The result is the kind of saccharine-inducing female empowerment tale that may even give hardcore feminists severe allergies.

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Clangs and Crashes [Review]

December 29, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Here’s the thing about ”Wonder Woman 1984,” it starts off like gangbusters only to whimper out into CGI overkill in its final hour. That’s the sad truth about director Patty Jenkins’ ambitious 2 1/2 hour sequel – it damn-near pummels you to submission by the time its climax is over with. Until then, this sequel to the 2017 mega-hit “Wonder Woman,” for the most part, works.

‘Bacurau’ Director Kleber Mendonça Filho Talks Brazil, Genre Cinema and Bong Joon-ho [Interview]

Back in March, with the pandemic shutting down theaters worldwide, 2020 was guaranteed to have at least one indisputably great movie released in its calendar. Regardless of how many films were released, “Bacurau,” which world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019, was definitely going to make the top 10 lists of more than a few critics — it has most certainly landed a spot on mine (being published this week).

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Box-Office Success Proves Moviegoers Still Prefer Theaters Over Streaming

‘Pieces Of A Woman’: Vanessa Kirby is Mesmerizing in Ambitious Netflix Drama [Review]

December 27, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

For 128 minutes, Vanessa Kirby has you hooked to her every move in Kornel Mundruczo’s “Pieces of a Woman.” As Martha, a high-powered executive who loses her child during a harrowing home birth, Kirby mesmerizes by showcasing the human frailty and devastation that happens when tragedy comes knocking at her door. Her acting tour-de-force reminded me of Gena Rowlands’ masterful work in John Cassavetes’ 1974 classic, “Woman Under the Influence.”

“News of the World”: A Very Hanks-ian, and Melancholic Western [Capsule]

‘Promising Young Woman’: A Feminist Revenge Fantasy For the Holidays [Capsule]

December 23, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

“Promising Young Woman” is arriving in theaters on Christmas Day via Focus Features. This is a gamble since we don’t even know how many theaters will be open nationwide by then, but, don’t fret my friends, a digital release is also in the books on that very same day. The film, which I saw this past January at the Sundance Film Festival, has a 74 on Metacritic and a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. No, it’s not the second coming of cinema, as some have over-excitingly pointed out, but it is a delightfully slick B-movie with an effective performance from Carey Mulligan.
