‘Midsommar': 3-Hour Director's Cut Adds Some Much Needed Depth to Ari Aster's Film

July 5, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

A re-evaluation of Ari Aster’s “Midsommar” was high on my list of writing priorities as I finally watched the 3-hour director’s cut — a fuller, more depth-filled and coherent version than the theatrically released one.

July 5, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Last October, the day after Martin Scorsese premiered “The Irishman” at the New York Film Festival, he had an on-stage chat with the fest's outgoing director Kent Jones at the Alice Tully Hull. The whole conversation is worth a watch on YouTube, as, during the course of the 30 minutes they had, Scorsese and Jones ended up talking about a host of cinematic topics, including Scorsese’s love for Joanna Hogg and Ari Aster.

Charlie Kaufman Praises Netflix and Criticizes Major Studios For ‘Ruining Movies'

July 3, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Netflix has become the go-to American studio for creative freedom and auteur-driven cinema. It’s not even a debate anymore. The studio system has become a cinematic cesspool of formulaic drivel. Netflix isn’t destroying cinema, rather, it’s actually saving it. Just look at the directors who decided to bring their passion projects to the streaming giant these last 5 years: Scorsese, Coen, Fincher, Soderbergh, Cuaron, Baumbach, Lee, and Bong.

‘Welcome to Chechnya': A Powerful Doc on LGBT Genocide in Chechnya [Review]

July 3, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

The pandemic-inflicted movie year hasn’t had a short supply of great docs: Sasha Neulinger’s “Rewind,” Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk’s “Athlete A,” James Lebrecht and Nicole Newnham “Crip Camp,” Benjamin Ree’s “The Painter and the Thief,” and Spike Jonze’s “Beastie Boys Story” — all well worth a look, if you haven’t already checked them out.

Only 35% of Moviegoers Are Willing to Go Back to Theaters in 2020

July 3, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

A THR study polled a number of US moviegoers about if they’d feel comfortable going back to theaters once they reopen. As you know, AMC, Regal, and Cinemark are set to reopen on July 31, just to prep up and stretch their legs for Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” which is, supposedly, set to be released two weeks later, followed by “Mulan” the week after that.

How New Technology is Helping Theaters Stand Out in the Age of Movie Streaming

July 3, 2020 John Torre

Streaming has had a profound impact on cinema. Prompted by this, Kyle Buchanan, in a recent article in the New York Times, asked a bunch of Hollywood execs, producers and directors how movies must adapt in the next few years. The general consensus is that the industry has to innovate, or it will be left behind.

‘Irresistible': Jon Stewart's Political Satire Falls Flat on its Ass [Review]

July 1, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

Do I even need to review this misbegotten Jon Stewart-directed bomb? Everything about Stewart’s irrelevant and tone-deaf “Irresistible” turns out to be out-of-touch with the current political zeitgeist. The former late-night show host commits an almost unredeemable act, he manages to make himself look completely out-of-touch with today’s political spectrum.

‘The Tax Collector’: Shia LaBeouf Play Rough in David Ayer’s Gangland Drama [Trailer]

July 1, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

David Ayer’s “The Tax Collector” is about the most dangerous ob in East L.A: being a tax collector in the gangster world. In a nutshell, the two main characters in Ayer’s latest action movie have to go from gang to gang in Los Angeles to collect “taxes” for business. Of course, to hit up these violent hotbeds monthly for late payments you need to have balls of steel and who better to play such a role than the ‘Honey Boy’ himself, Shia LaBeouf.

Woody Allen's Blacklisted ‘Rainy Day in New York' May Finally Be Released in the U.S.

Woody Allen’s 49th film as writer-director, “A Rainy Day in New York,” put in the can in 2018, never came out in the States due to Allen being axed via 25-year-old #MeToo allegations, which he still fervently denies. The film was completed in 2018, but its distributor, Amazon Studios, halted the release of the film following the controversy.

Netflix Buys Aaron Sorkin’s ‘The Trial Of Chicago 7’ For $56 Million

Studios are quite clearly panicking at the moment, which means streaming platforms such as Netflix are trying to take advantage of that panic by buying up 2020 releases. After all is said and done, we might have to call next year’s Oscars, the Netflix awards.

‘Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga': Rachel McAdams Saves This Bittersweet Comedy [Review]

June 30, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

In “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” Will Ferrell, for the first time in his career, plays a musician, and no, his angelic vocal performance in “Step Brothers” does not count. Directed by David Dobkin (“Wedding Crashers”), this zany comedy is the kind of sentimental feel-goodery I can accept in these locked-up days of COVID, to a certain extent, of course.

Usually, an independent movie will have to debut at a few film festivals to build up buzz for its release. That hasn’t happened for director James D’Arcy’s “Made in Italy,” which follows a father and son, as they fix an old house in Tuscany, which seems to be used as a metaphor for their own problematic relationship.

John Wayne's Son Defends His Late Dad: “He Did Not Support White Supremacy"

June 30, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

This past weekend, California Democrats in Orange County asked for the county’s John Wayne Airport to be renamed over “racist and bigoted statements” made by the Western legend more than four decades ago. It was another attempt by the social media mob to defame and delegitimize a historical figure, this time a late cinematic legend who has very much become a controversial figure in the recent age of social media mobs.

France Reopens Movie Theaters, Millions Show Up; No Mask or Social Distancing Policies

June 29, 2020 Jordan Ruimy

What’s happening in France is quite remarkable. Having reopened its theaters on June 22, the country managed to sell 850,000 and 900,000 admissions through Sunday [via Variety], with the million tickets sold mark set to be hit on Tuesday. It’s roughly 50% less than an average week in June, but considering there are no new releases being screened, only 60% of theaters have reopened and fears of a second wave of COVID-19, it’s an “outstanding result that is beyond our most optimistic forecast,” said Eric Marti at Comscore France.
