David Fincher is notoriously known for doing an obsessive amount of takes per scene, all just to make sure he gets the best performance from all of his actors and the “perfect shot.” This is the same man who literally had to stop a take because a tiny thread was out of place in someone’s jumper on “Zodiac.” So, yeah, he clearly has a bad case of OCD as well. But so did Kubrick.

South Korea’s 2016 film “Train to Busan” became a worldwide hit for horror fans, mostly due to its unique take on the zombie genre. And now, the film’s sequel, “Peninsula,” looks to continue on that path.

The 93rd Academy Awards have not been canceled, but a delay is happening. This afternoon the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors announced the 2021 Oscars will not be taking place on February 28, 2021. Instead, the ceremony will be telecast on ABC on April 25, 2021, almost two months later. Yikes.

After giving an interview with New York's WOR 710 radio on Friday, in which he defended Woody Allen from 25-year-old sexual misbehavior allegations, Spike Lee gave in to the mob and actually wrote a Twitter apology, in which he stated regretting his defense of Allen earlier in the day. The statement read, “I deeply apologize. My words were wrong. I do not and will not tolerate sexual harassment, assault, or violence. Such treatment causes real damage that can’t be minimized.”

What a shocker. Spike Lee’s overpraised “Da 5 Bloods” is getting mediocre audience scores (62% on Rotten Tomatoes). Why am I not surprised?
Read more‘Tenet': Christopher Nolan Pressuring Warner Bros. To Go Forward With Release
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why the WB delayed “Tenet” from July 14th to July 31st yesterday. They relayed all the pressure of being the first studio to release a major blockbuster over to Disney and “Mulan,” which is set for release on July 24th. Expect it to be delayed very soon, though, and the pressure to shift back to Nolan and the WB.

Dave Chappelle released a surprise half-hour standup special on the “Netflix Is A Joke” YouTube channel. The special was filmed just last weekend at the outdoor Wirrig Pavilion in his hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio. Yes, there’s a crowd for the special, but Chappelle seems to be abiding by all the COVID-19 guidelines. The audience is spaced out, wearing masks, and seated outdoors.

Read moreThe Case For ‘Tropic Thunder'
Comedians like to push boundaries until that very fine line of what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable is somewhat squeezed to its very limit. That, to me, is what the very best of comedy can do. Regardless of the situation that we find ourselves in today when it comes to what can and cannot be said, which is primarily being lead by 'activists' on social media, a movie such as Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder" still existing in this maddening stratosphere, uncancelled, is almost a miraculous occurrence.

Warner Bros. Pictures has delayed the release dates of both Christopher Nolan’s upcoming “Tenet” (from July 17th to July 31st) and “Wonder Woman 1984” (from August 12th to October 2nd).
Read moreDirector Asghar Farhadi Set to Shoot New Movie
Asghar Farhadi has built a career out of making breathtaking family dramas. With "About Elly," "A Separation," "The Past," and "The Salesman," the Iranian-born writer-director has easily cemented his name on the shortlist of modern world-class directors. I can count these rare and incisively talented filmmakers in less than two hands. So it came as a major disappointment to dislike the 46-year-old director’s last film, the Spanish-language drama "Everybody Knows," which I saw at Cannes 2018. It was a half-decent whodunnit affair, but we've come to expect much more from the Iranian-born director. Sometimes, expectations really do dictate how you feel about a film. This was the perfect example.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the first part of its “Academy Aperture 2025.” This initiative is meant to “advance inclusion in the entertainment industry and increase representation within its membership and the greater film community.” The biggest surprise for me? A set-in-stone lineup of 10 best picture nominees starting in 2021.
Read more‘Dirt Music': Kelly Macdonald and Garrett Hedlund Fight For Their Love in Tepid Drama [Trailer]
I’ll watch anything starring Kelly Macdonald, but “Dirt Music,” set for VOD release on July 17th, has been critically shamed ever since its subdued debut at TIFF last September. Check out that 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, that 33 on Metacritic or even the laughably bad poster, which makes the movie look more like a faith-based Christian drama than the down-and-dirty product the newly-released trailer hints at. “Down-and-dirty” won’t be enough to lift this drama up when it is released on the same day as Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet.” Yikes.

Just 24 hours after being blackballed by HBO Max for “racist depictions,” Americans were quick to try and snatch up a copy of “Gone With the Wind“ on Blu-Ray and DVD. Read moreSpike Lee's ‘Da 5 Bloods' May Be Timely, But It Won't Age Well Over Time [Review]
Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” comes post-mortem after the entire country went through close to two weeks of protests and riots due to the murder of George Floyd. The timing, you might say, couldn’t be more appropriate; after all, Lee, always the political firecracker, infuses his latest film with snap-a-minute political undertones at every turn. It’s a no-brainer that critics will fall for this movie-of-the-moment, even if, and bear with me here, if the end result is nothing short of an incoherent mess.
Read moreHBO Max Removes ‘Gone With the Wind' From Its Library Due to ‘Racist Depictions'
The 1939 American classic “Gone With the Wind” has been temporarily pulled from HBO Max until further notice. All this after the streaming company got some major flack due to an op-ed by “12 Years A Slave” screenwriter John Ridley which was published in the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday. The gist of the op-ed has to do with Ridley calling on HBO Max to "consider removing" “Gone With the Wind” from its platform as the film has its "own unique problem." "You see, Ridley writes, the civil war epic, and winner of the 1939 Best Picture Oscar, doesn’t just “fall short” with regard to representation, it’s also a film that ignores the horrors of slavery and “perpetuates some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color."

Skipping the Venice Film Festival this year will be hometown boy Nanni Moretti, whose “Tre Piani” is now set for a Cannes 2021 world premiere [via Il Fatto Quotidiano]. This is a crushing loss for Venice boss Alberto Barbera, who was counting on Moretti’s film to launch his festival this coming September. Barbera is refusing to go digital and is planning on a live, physical edition of the festival, one which would have hand sanitizer at every corner, face masks, and rooms filled at half capacity. Good luck with that Mr. Barbera.
