After its massive $80 million opening last weekend, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is projected to come back down to earth— it will still easily claim the #1 spot this weekend, but with a $30 million haul. That’s a steep 60% drop. Still, the film has already made $100 million domestically and well over $200 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, 20th Century’s supernatural prequel “The First Omen,” starring Nell Tiger Free, and which cost $30 million to produce, is projected to finish in second place with $15 million. This is the first ‘Omen’ installment since 2006’s reboot, starring Liev Schreiber and Julia Stiles.
Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man,” which I’m only seeing tomorrow, should earn about $12 million for third place. Patel’s film was initially destined for Netflix and not the big screen. Universal Pictures landed rights feeling it was deserving of a theatrical release. It was picked up for $10 million.
