A Sony press release has “Spider Man: Brand New Day” with the highest 10-day domestic run ever. Through tomorrow, the US total will be $653M, and $1.7 billion worldwide. Talk about a blockbuster—this is the definition of one.
The trades figure this one might hit $2.7 billion by the end of its run. It might be more, or less; we don’t really know. There’s no competition all of August, not even “The End of Oak Street,” which is currently tracking at a $15M opening weekend. Yikes.
Just this weekend alone, “Brand New Day” amassed $145M, per Sony, and given how they’ve lowballed estimates since the beginning, it could end up being more by Monday morning. Right now, it’s the third-best second weekend in box office history. That “A” CinemaScore and 98% RT Popcornmeter mean audiences like this movie a lot. There have no doubt been repeat attendees.
As for “The Odyssey,” it made $31M this weekend. The holds have been great, and it should end its run at $1.3 billion worldwide.
Not much else popped this weekend at the box office. The much-mocked “One Night Only” only grossed $5.7M. The RT audience gave it 72%; reviews are at 48%. No sex or nudity—the director claimed it was due to prudish audiences. That backfired.
The other new releases didn’t fare any better: “Super Troopers 3”? $4M weekend, and that’s despite playing on a healthy 2,760 screens. Eli Roth’s “Ice Cream Man”? Oh, so much worse. Roth’s production company decided not to reveal the numbers, but some are estimating $2M. Even with that $6M budget, Roth’s film might not break even.
Two noteworthy limited releases: Matt Johnson’s “Tony,” about Anthony Bourdain, played in only six theaters but still managed $349K, or $58k per-theater-average, slightly besting Jane Schoenbrun’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,” which earned $252K in just five theaters, $50k average.
The short version: "Woman Unknown" was a compromise. The jury deadlocked over "Possible Love" and "NAZA," not able to com to terms, fell back on their #3, May el-Toukhy's film.
